Course waste water treatment

Course waste water treatment

Showcase 4EWS needs well trained staff (both knowledge and skills) to improve the operating and maintenance of the treatments plants. In this showcase a module ‘Basics of waste water treatment’ for operators grade 10/12 will be designed, developed and delivered according to the ISO 9001 certified procedures of ‘Wateropleidingen’. Water professionals from EWS and Waternet will take part in the customizing of the module. Professionals of EWS will be trained to become trainers for this module and in the future the module will be delivered to the operators of EWS by the trainers/professionals of EWS.4organisation training

pdfCoE showcase 4 - Course Waste Water Treatment

Background

The Netherlands and the Republic of South Africa have a long lasting relationship. Until recently this relationship had a focus on development cooperation. Although South Africa still has many development goals ahead, it is not considered to be a developing country anymore (from the perspective of the Dutch government) and is currently in a ‘transition’ phase. As a result the long lasting relationship is transformed from aid to trade. The Centre of Expertise assists in this transformation.

Asset Management

Asset Management

image003Through the playing of the Asset Management game based on international standards (ISO 55.000 and PAS 55) Water Service Authorities will gain a more in depth perspective of their own asset management needs and challenges, resulting in a focused implementation of asset management principles and ideas.4organisation training

Background

Asset Management is one of the topics EWS identified that require improvement. The Dutch water sector has developed in the past a management game based on the PAS55 principles on Asset management.

VEI has adopted (and adjusted) the game in the past for her project in Yemen. The board game is the property of Colibri Advice, a small consultancy firm.

The game assist those utilities that want to improve their asset management, but don’t know exactly where to start. The issues and dilemma’s that are presented in the game facilitate the (broader) discussion on what Asset Management is for the specific utility.

Technology

Serious gaming is an effective training instrument for employees. Role simulation is used to explore future strategies for the implementation of asset management in a safe environment.

The direct benefits of playing the game are the sharing of views, a better understanding of asset management responsibilities and a shared vision on how asset management should be developed within the own organisation.

Playing the game directly supports the preparation of an asset management implementation plan and the communication of this strategy to the entire organisation.

The game can be incorporated in an existing 4 day training program on asset management. The playing of the game could take a 2 or 3 hours in this training as a practical exercise for decision support.

Status & Feedback

The showcase has been concluded in 2014.

To assist water utilities in the introduction of asset management, a serious game was developed as a showcase. eThekwiniWater and Sanitation, Centre of Expertise and Colibri Advies tailored the management game for the South African situation.

In addition, train-the-trainers course material was developed to train and support local game facilitators.

The game can be adapted to organisations specific interests and needs.

Results

The asset management game is developed to give utilities a better understanding of what asset management is all about. The physical board game is played by five players representing various departments of a water utility together with a game facilitator.

The players are confronted with a limited budget and a series of challenges that they have to tackle as an individual player and as a team. The overall performance of the asset management organization is expressed as stakeholder value.

The aim of the game is to achieve the highest score as a team and as an individual player. Playing the game takes about 1 ½ - 2 hours.

Available is:

  • Adjusted board game to the South African circumstances (asset management dilemma’s, graphics of the game board etc.);
  • Documented step-by-step approach to introduce (and adjust) the game at South-African peer utilities.

Training

The game is available in current format at the Centre of Expertise.

In addition, train-the-trainers course material was developed to train and support local game facilitators.

The game could be of interest for South African consultancies and training institutes. The game is transferable to other sectors like energy and mining and can be adapted to organisations specific interests and needs.
