The operational aspects of a Nutrient recovery installation are documented and the influence of phosphorous removal at the effluent of the belt press on the final effluent quality is investigated.

Background

The application of Struvite precipitation technology on anaerobic effluent from the belt press reduces the phosphorous concentration in the final effluent at Northern Works.

In addition, it allows the municipality to recover valuable nutrients from its waste water and sell them as a fertilizer.

Technology

The liquid fraction of the belt press contains a high amount of ammonia and phosphorous.

Colsen International has developed a batch wise process to decrease the phosphorous concentration in the anaerobic effluent from the belt press: ANPHOS®. The phosphates are recovered in the form of struvite crystals ((MgNH4PO4.6H2O or MgKPO4.6H2O). This crystal can be sold as a fertilizer. The treated effluent will be drained from the ANPHOS® reaction tank and will be fed into the main line of the waste water treatment works.

The showcase is expected to start in the second half of 2014.
